KDP Rocket Review/Publisher Rocket Review

KDP Rocket 1.0 has been changed and renamed to Publisher Rocket 2.0. Therefore, “KDP Rocket” and “Publisher Rocket” are the same software – the software that we are going to be reviewing here. Keyword Research Company has been using Rocket since 2017, and it is our favorite KDP keyword research tool by far! The creator of Rocket, Dave Chesson, is always striving to improve this KDP keyword tool on our behalf, so we are proud to recommend it to our readers, and we do so with full confidence that you will love Rocket as much as we have!

Effectively, this KDP Rocket review/Publisher Rocket review is a KDP Rocket tutorial in and of itself. Our goal is to show you exactly how Rocket works so that you can determine if it is the right tool for your needs. Leading up to the creation of this review for our readers, we thought about comparing Kindle Spy vs. KDP Rocket. However, we are adamant about Rocket. We use it, we know it, and we love it, and we don’t want to recommend anything to our valued readers that we wouldn’t use ourselves.

Has KDP Rocket Changed?

Yes. KDP Rocket has changed, and it’s not just the name that’s different either! The first thing that you’ll notice about KDP Rocket is that it has a very clean and intuitive user interface. You don’t have to log in every time you want to use it. You can pin the app to the taskbar on your computer and open it with a single click and start using KDP Rocket right away.

We’ve owned Rocket since 2017, and we’ve noticed that it is changing all the time, but in good ways. In other words, the product is always improving. The most obvious improvements to Rocket are the most noticeable ones. For example, we noticed right away that Publisher Rocket 2.0 is much, much faster than KDP Rocket 1.0 was – 9x faster to be specific! That was one of our biggest complaints about the old Rocket – you sometimes had to wait forever for the data to load, which was a real drag! Secondly, we really appreciate the new look and design of Publisher Rocket 2.0, which is much more user-friendly and intuitive. 

Publisher Rocket 2.0 has come a long way since KDP Rocket 1.0. Back when KDP Rocket first launched, the only two features that it offered were Keyword Search and Competition Analyzer. Over time, the software has improved to include Category Search and AMS Keyword Search as well. However, as cool and as helpful as these new features are, they ended up making Rocket much slower than it was before this, which was probably our biggest gripe about KDP Rocket. Fortunately, that problem has been taken care of.

In addition to the changes that have been made to Rocket, there are some new changes for Rocket on the way as well. An In-Depth Look at the KDP Rocket Changes

Now, let’s look at each of the four features of Rocket and talk about how they have been improved with the change to Publisher Rocket 2.0.

Keyword Search

In the old KDP Rocket, the software was only capable of analyzing Kindle data when users would utilize the Keyword Search feature. With the newest version of Rocket, users now have the choice to select between “Book” data or “E-Book” data when using the Keyword Search function of Rocket. Although we are accustomed to thinking of Rocket for e-books, we can now think of KDP Rocket for print books as well.

Competition Analyzer

In the Competition Analyzer feature, Rocket users now have the ability to see how different formats of a book are performing for a keyword that they select. If you find a Kindle book in the Competition Analyzer, you can simply click a button and see the data for either format of the book. This improvement allows self-publishers to see how their competitors’ books and e-book versions are performing.

Category Search

With the old KDP Rocket Category Search feature, users would have to type in a descriptive phrase. KDP Rocket would then list many of the categories found from the books that showed up for that phrase. Honestly, we, at Keyword Research Company, did not like this feature of KDP Rocket, and we never used it anyway. We just didn’t find it useful to sift through hundreds – even thousands – of category strings manually, trying to find the closest match for our book. Besides, Amazon eliminated the category strings from all of its pages and instead started to display short-phrase, broad categories. 

The bummer is that, In order to have your book included in a specific category, you need to have the long version of the category string. The upgraded version of Rocket now lists all of the category strings for all e-books and books on Amazon. To access these category strings, you simply need to open up Category Search, choose “Book” or “E-Book,” and then choose either “Fiction” or “Non-Fiction.” From there, you can choose one of the main categories that best describe your book, and you can view all of the sub-categories with the Amazon Best Seller Rank. It tells you how many books you would need to sell to take the #1 spot for that book.

AMS Keyword Search

In our opinion, this is the best feature of Publisher Rocket 2.0. In the Gold Rush days of KDP, all you needed was a few keywords in your book’s title, subtitle, and description, and your book would be found by interested readers. Well, suffice it to say that it’s not that simple anymore! Let’s face it; we live in a pay to play world now, and AMS ads are comparable to PPC ads for Google, assuming you know anything about those. 

If you are self-publishing a book, and you don’t have an advanced marketing strategy in place with a robust platform to propel your book’s sales, then you’re going to want to set up an AMS campaign. However, Amazon Marketing Services (AMS) campaigns will only be as successful as the keywords you choose for them. Your AMS campaigns need to have hundreds of keywords in them if you expect to see meaningful results. 

All you have to do is open the AMS Keyword Search feature of Rocket, type in a description, and Rocket will do the rest. Publisher Rocket 2.0 will list the following for you:

    • Amazon A-Z suggested keywords
    • Title and author for the top 20 in the keyword results
    • Title and author for the top 20 in the categories

You can get hundreds of relevant keywords with the click of a button. When you are ready, you can click the export button, name the file, and save it on your computer. Later, you can upload it to your AMS campaign.

Who Should Own KDP Rocket/Publisher Rocket?

KDP Rocket is an exceptional tool for anyone who is serious about self-publishing e-books on the Amazon platform. In fact, we would say that it is a must-have! Keyword Research Company has published several books on Amazon, and we don’t know how we would have done it without KDP Rocket! We always use KDP Rocket to find our keywords when we publish e-books and to set up our AMS campaigns. It has worked miracles for us, and that is why we recommend it to you. 

Of all the best keyword research tools on the market today, KDP Rocket is our favorite for KDP. While tools like Moz and SEMRush are great for finding keywords, KDP Rocket/Publisher Rocket is a keyword tool that was made specifically for self-published authors who want to publish books and e-books on Amazon. 

Finding Keywords with Rocket: A Worked Example

One of the cool things about KDP Rocket is that it shows both Amazon and Google data for keyword searches. As you will see below, we executed a search for the keyword “World War 3.” Notice how Rocket gives us the estimated monthly searches for this keyword for Google and Amazon.

This is important because you may decide that you want to sell your book on your website or otherwise outside of the Amazon platform. It’s good to know if a keyword that is searched for frequently on Amazon is also searched for frequently in Google.

Please note that monthly search volumes are symbols, not actual numbers. No keyword tool on earth can display this information accurately because Google and Amazon do not release their monthly search data for keywords. The most sophisticated keyword research tools use other signals and measurements to determine a keyword’s popularity. Larger numbers in the Estimated Monthly Search Volume columns means that a keyword is more popular while smaller numbers in the Estimated Monthly Search Volume means that fewer people are searching for the keyword each month.

Now, let’s look at the example above. Specifically, let’s look at the different data points that Rocket gives us.

Keyword

On the left side of the screen, you will notice the section titled, “Keyword.” The first keyword in the list is the keyword that we searched for – “World War 3.” All of the keywords below this first keyword are keyword suggestions provided by KDP Rocket/Publisher Rocket. These are relevant variations of the keyword that we searched for and are real keywords that Amazon users and or Google users have searched for.

Number of Competitors

Next, you will notice a column titled, “Number of Competitors.” This column displays the number of books that exist on Amazon that are relevant to the keyword that you searched for. In the case of the keyword, “World War 3,” you can see that there are more than 9k books that Amazon found that it thinks are related to “World War 3.” However, while 9k+ competitors might seem like to many to overcome, don’t be discouraged by this number!

There are two ways that you can analyze your competition. One, you could click the green button on the right side of the page that says “Competition,” or you can go to the menu at the top of the screen and click “Competition Analyzer” – the one with the ribbon icon with the star in it. Upon closer examination of your competition, you may discover that only a handful of books are specifically related to the topic of “World War 3.” Others might have passively mentioned the phrase, so it appears in this column. For example, there could be a book about President Trump, and in the description of said book it says, “Some people are afraid that President Trump is going to trigger world war 3 with all of his hostile rhetoric.”

If you are creating an entire book around the keyword, “World War 3,” then Amazon is going to see your book as much more relevant to this keyword than the book in the example above. Therefore, be sure to check out your competition before determining that there are too many competitors for a keyword solely based on the figure “Number of Competitors” column alone.

Average Monthly Earnings

This feature tells us how much money the top books that are ranking for our keyword, “World War 3” are earning each month on average. As you can see, the top-ranking books on Amazon for the keyword “World War 3” are earning approximately $338/month. Obviously, the higher this number is, the better!

Google Searches Month/Est. Amazon Searches Month

These figures are self-explanatory. Rocket displays how many monthly searches a keyword gets in both Amazon and Google. This is important if you are thinking about selling your book off of the Amazon platform, such as on your website. It is good to know if the search term is popular on Amazon and Google.

Just a word of caution about these figures; Google and Amazon do not release keyword search volumes. No keyword tool on earth has access to this data, so think of these numbers as symbols rather than exact search volumes. The higher the number, the more popular the search term is. The best keyword research tools look at other indicators, data sets, and information to determine how popular a keyword is, but they have no way of knowing the exact numbers.

Competitive Score

Rocket’s competitive score is based on a scale of 0-100, with 0 being no competition at all and 100 being extremely competitive. You want the competitive score to be less than 40 for your keyword, but really, less than 30 would be even better! Any keyword with a competitive score of 41+ is probably going to be too difficult for you to rank your book for that keyword.
